Maame Gold reveals how she was allegedly defrauded by close friend of about $130,000
Entrepreneur and socialite Irene Adusei Sarkodie, popularly known as Maame Gold, has recounted how a friend she used to call her “sister” allegedly defrauded her of about $130,000.
Speaking to Emelia Brobbey on the Okukuseku show aired on September 21, 2026, Maame Gold said that when she returned to Ghana after spending most of her life abroad, she rented a space for her business, but the rent was outrageously expensive.
According to her, she met a lady on Facebook who suggested that instead of spending huge sums of money on rent for a shop, she should acquire land and build a shop of her own.
Maame Gold said when the suggestion was brought before her, she thought it was a very smart financial move.
The lady she had met on Facebook subsequently became her friend and started showing her around, as she was not familiar with most places and things in Ghana after returning from abroad following a long stay.
She said the relationship gradually moved from friendship to what she described as sisterhood, as she opened her home to the lady and treated her like family.
According to Maame Gold, at one point, the lady brought some individuals to her and told her about a piece of land that was being sold at Shiashie.
She said she gave the individuals her Mercedes-Benz ML350 and an additional $95,000 in cash towards the purchase of the land.
However, she did not take a receipt for the money because she trusted the woman, whom she regarded as her “sister,” the middle person in the transaction.

Maame Gold said the friend later returned to inform her that additional money was needed for documentation and other processes relating to the land, prompting her to give her about GH¢75,000.
She said she later realised that her friend had defrauded her, while the land remains idle at Shiashie because of ongoing litigation over its ownership.
She said after all the expenses, she had been defrauded of a total of about $125,000 and that the matter is still before the Adenta Court in Accra.
“I was at my shop when she brought some people to me. When I gave them the money, I didn’t even take receipts because I knew my ‘sister’ was the middle person. I gave them my Mercedes-Benz ML350 and an additional $95,000 in cash.
“Later, this friend of mine came back saying she needed extra money for documentation and other things. There is currently litigation over the land at Shiashie. It was fraud. That girl defrauded me. The total is about $125,000. It's still in court, Adenta court,” Maame Gold shared.
Maame Gold said the money she gave directly to her friend upset her more than the money that went to the individuals she had brought to facilitate the purchase of the land.
She explained that although the court process has helped her recover some of the money, she is still owed about $45,000.
Maame Gold said what shocked her most about the incident was that her supposed friend, in an attempt to cover up her actions, allegedly went around claiming that Maame Gold’s boyfriend was the person who had brought the land to her.
According to Maame Gold, the claim was intended to make it appear as though she had been defrauded by her own boyfriend at the time, which she said was not the case.
