Ntim Fordjour calls for collective parliamentary action on drug crisis

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Ntim Fordjour, has called for a united parliamentary response to Ghana’s growing narcotics crisis, warning that the issue should be treated as a national security threat rather than a partisan matter. According to a report by myjoyonline.com on September 23, 2026, Fordjour said Parliament must prioritise the national interest as concerns mount over a series of major international drug seizures linked to Ghana. He urged MPs across the political divide to approach the proposed parliamentary recall with a shared commitment to protecting the country and its citizens. “They should come and not make it politics. They should have Ghana first, constituency first,” he said. Fordjour warned that the consequences of drug trafficking could extend beyond Ghana’s role as a transit point, noting that some of the narcotics could remain in the country and expose young people to substance abuse. “All these drugs, when they come in, not all go out. A lot will be retained here. It’s your children, your youth, and then our own people will be consumed and be destroyed by it,” he indicated. He also raised concerns about the wider security implications of the narcotics trade, linking drug trafficking to money laundering and terrorism. Four Ghanaians have since been arraigned before the Accra High Court. A fifth suspect, Dutch national Jos Leijdekkers, remains at large.
