NSMQ 2026: Bright SHS star Mercy Okang wins $40,000 scholarship
The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has announced that Bright Senior High School’s contestant, Mercy Adjeley Okang, has been awarded a US$40,000 full scholarship to pursue an undergraduate programme at Academic City University in Accra.
The scholarship, announced on the NSMQ social media page on September 22, 2026, follows Mercy’s impressive performance in the 2026 Quiz competition.
It covers tuition, accommodation, meals, a monthly stipend, a laptop and books.
Mercy was among Bright Senior High School's key contestants, as the school made history as the first private school to reach the NSMQ semi-finals.
The Eastern Region-based school secured its historic semi-final place after a dramatic quarter-final contest against Amaniampong SHS and Chemu SHTS.
Bright SHS entered the final round trailing Chemu SHTS by two points but produced a strong finish to score 27 points in the GOIL Super Bonanza, edging Chemu’s 26 points and Amaniampong’s 22 points.
GH¢120,000, scholarships, foreign trips await NSMQ 2026 finalists
The achievement marked the school’s first appearance in the semi-finals after making its NSMQ debut in 2024.
In the semi-final, Bright SHS continued its impressive run, finishing second with 44 points behind Accra Academy’s 54 points and ahead of Achimota School’s 43 points.
Although the school missed out on a place in the grand finale, its historic campaign earned significant recognition, with Mercy emerging as one of the competition’s most prominent individual performers.
She was also named the Most Outstanding Female Contestant and received a GH¢5,000 cash prize under the Professor Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu Award.
