French footballer Kylian Mbappe has said he will dedicate the prestigious Ballon d’Or to Africa if he is announced as the winner of the 2026 edition.
He stated that although he is French, he appreciates his roots and his Cameroonian heritage, adding that the values instilled in him have played an important role in his professional career.
He also spoke fondly of his recent visit to Cameroon and the warm reception he received.

“I’ve always had an upbringing steeped in African culture, even though I was born in France and did everything in France. I have never cut ties with my roots, my origins. It’s part of the values instilled in you.
“I went back to Cameroon not long ago. I used to go there when I was little; I had an amazing time. Every time I go to Africa, I’m always welcomed so warmly; I feel the love from people,” he said in an interview with RFI.
The Real Madrid superstar went on to appeal to African voters in the Ballon d’Or voting process, highlighting his connection to the continent.
He promised to dedicate the prestigious accolade to Africa if he is crowned the winner of the 2026 award.
“A message for the African voters for the Ballon d’Or? First off, thank them for the support over all these years. I’ve always felt so loved every time I’ve set foot on the African continent.
“I think that, having African origins, it’s always a pleasure when people associate me with the Ballon d’Or. I thank them for everything, and I hope to leave with the Ballon d’Or and, in one way or another, dedicate it to them,” he added.
Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal and Harry Kane are among the players tipped as favourites for the Ballon d’Or, with the winner expected to be announced at a ceremony in London in October 2026.
