Tensions escalate as EOCO officers attempt to arrest NPP MP and lawyer
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour, clashed with an officer of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) who attempted to arrest him on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
The attempted arrest took place at the premises of the Accra High Court, where the MP was expected to represent his client, Salomey Awiti Bafoh, a senior nurse implicated in the Ghana Jollof public incitement case,
The EOCO officer is seen standing in front of the driver's door of the MP's vehicle, asking him to follow her to the EOCO office.
The NPP MP, who looked enraged, asked her what showed she was an officer of EOCO and why they were looking for him.
He claimed that his attempted arrest was because he was representing his client in the Ghana Jollof case.
He told the woman to move from the front door of his car, but she refused, which caused him to push her.
The woman fought back, insisting that the NPP was needed at EOCO.
One of the lawyers who was with Nana Agyei Baffour is heard saying that EOCO should write to the Speaker of Parliament if they indeed want to arrest the MP because there is a procedure for that.
It is not clear why EOCO was attempting to take custody of the MP, but he had earlier claimed that there was a cocaine manufacturing plant in Ghana.
Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on Tuesday, the NPP MP asserted that Ghana was not only a transit point for cocaine smuggling and that there was some level of manufacturing ongoing in the country.
He stated that his party has intelligence that confirms the claim.
Asked whether his party’s claim was “theory or a fact”, Agyei Baffour said, “Fact based on intelligence.”
“There's some degree, some level of manufacturing in here… it's a fact based on intelligence... Don't underestimate the New Patriotic Party as a major political party. People give us information,” he added.
The NPP legislator went on to call on the government to initiate an enquiry into the issues surrounding the smuggling of cocaine through Ghana.
“It is on this basis that an enquiry is very necessary, because if it is established, like we have been informed by way of our intelligence, that indeed there is a manufacturing hub in this country, then it's a very serious matter.
“If it is also established that indeed there is an importation, it is also equally a very serious matter,” he said.
When asked to disclose the location of the hub, the MP said that he couldn’t do so publicly.
He also refused to state whether the NPP had informed the nation’s security apparatus about its intelligence on the existence of the cocaine manufacturing hub.
