Former Second Lady, Matilda Amissah-Arthur, has recounted a bizarre incident in the aftermath of her husband’s death, describing how vulnerable bereaved people can become following the loss of a loved one. Recounting the incidence in a recent interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey, she said following the death of her husband and a former Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, a man came to their home, claiming that he can resurrect the late vice president. She said she was in another room when her son alerted her to the man’s presence. “One person came and said, ‘My husband is not dead. We should take him to the mortuary to resurrect my husband,’” she said. What my husband’s death taught me - Matilda Amissah-Arthur She said the incident left her stunned, particularly because it happened when she was still dealing with the shock of her husband’s death. “I was in my room, and my son came and said, ‘Mummy, we sacked him because we know when you go out, you will beat him. So, we sacked him," the former Second Lady recalled. According to her, the incident clearly portrayed how some people may attempt to take advantage of those who are grieving. “Unfortunately, some people would go that way and say, Oh, let’s go, let’s do this. Let’s do that. When you are bereaved, you are vulnerable,” she said. Amissah-Arthur said that vulnerability makes it important for bereaved people to have trusted individuals around them who can help them make sound decisions. “So that’s why you need this group of people around you who are steering you to the right place, who are saying the things you need to hear,” she said. She also cautioned against people who visit bereaved families merely to gather information and pass it on to others. “There are some who just come to look at you to go and tell,” she said. Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, an economist, academic and politician, served as Ghana’s sixth vice president under President John Mahama from August 2012 to January 2017. He died on June 29, 2018, at the 37 Military Hospital after reportedly collapsing at the Air Force Gym during his routine morning workout session.
