GMA refutes claims of ineffective vessel monitoring system
The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has categorically dismissed claims that its vessel monitoring system is ineffective and that vessels sailing on Ghana’s waters are not being monitored.
In a press statement dated 22nd September 2026, the Authority responded to comments made by Dennis Miracles Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief.
“The GMA categorically refutes these claims. They are false, misleading, and do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana. The Authority’s surveillance system for monitoring vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction is operational,” the statement said.
The GMA explained that it continues to deploy its maritime domain awareness tools for continuous monitoring.
“The Authority continues to use its maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and maintains 24-hour surveillance and monitoring of vessels in Ghana’s maritime domain. The system is also used for monitoring and protecting offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables,” it added.
According to the Authority, standard operating procedures are followed to track vessels, verify their identity and compliance, and support safety, security and environmental protection within Ghana’s maritime domain.
“The suggestion that vessels in Ghana’s waters are not monitored is therefore untrue,” the GMA stated.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime interests. “The GMA remains committed to continuous surveillance and the protection of Ghana’s maritime interests. We urge the public to disregard the claim and to rely on official communications from the Authority,” the statement said.
