'He failed to honour two invitations since February 2026' - EOCO on attempted arrest of NPP MP
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has explained that its officers attempted to arrest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, because he had failed to honour two invitations to assist with an ongoing investigation.
The attempted arrest took place on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the premises of the Accra High Court and was captured in videos circulating on social media.

According to EOCO in a statement dated Wednesday, September 23, 2026, the MP was invited twice in February 2026 to assist with the investigation but did not honour the invitations.
“The Office had previously invited Hon Baffour Awuah to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026. The invitations were not honoured,” EOCO said.
The office said it subsequently took steps to secure his attendance in line with the law, describing today’s attempted arrest as one of those steps.
“EOCO wishes to clarify that its officers, acting in the lawful discharge of their statutory responsibilities, attempted to effect the arrest of Hon. Baffour today, 23 September 2026, in connection with an ongoing investigation,” it explained.
EOCO further added that its officers, despite their efforts had to back down from the arrest after they had assessed that further action could endanger public safety.
“During today’s attempted arrest, the situation escalated and the arrest was not successfully completed as officers assessed that a counter action would have endangered public safety,” EOCO added.
The office also said it had identified two people who allegedly intervened to help the MP escape.
“EOCO has also identified two persons who, based on the circumstances captured on video, are alleged to have actively intervened to facilitate the escape of the MP,” it said.
EOCO said it is assessing the conduct of the two individuals and will take the appropriate legal steps if necessary.
The office further confirmed that Baffour Awuah later went to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, although Parliament is currently on recess.
It added that it recognises the constitutional privileges and immunities of MPs and will operate within the Constitution and applicable laws.

“Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law,” the office assured.
“At the same time, EOCO will not take any step that is inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection provided by the Constitution,” it added.
EOCO said the investigation remains active and that it will review the circumstances surrounding the failed arrest, including available video evidence, before deciding on its next steps.
