Fibre cuts remain a major cost to telecom industry — Telco Chamber CEO
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, has called for stronger protection of telecommunications infrastructure to reduce the cost of repeated damage to fibre networks across Ghana.
According to the CEO, telecom companies have invested heavily in infrastructure over the years, but frequent fibre cuts continue to create significant costs for the industry and affect the quality of digital services.
Speaking during the 28th Forum of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications on September 23, 2026, she said the industry had been raising concerns about fibre cuts for more than a decade, yet the problem remained unresolved.

“I’ve been in the industry for close to two decades this year, and we started conversations about fibre cuts as far back as 10, 15 years ago when we started rolling out data. Unfortunately, it’s still a pain today, and it’s a heavy cost that the industry continues to have,” she said.
She said protecting existing telecommunications infrastructure should be treated as a priority if Ghana wants to attract further investment into the sector.
The CEO noted that telecom operators across the industry had already committed significant capital to building networks and expanding digital infrastructure.
“How are we protecting even the investment that has come through in the first place in order to demand more investments?” the CEO asked.

Owusu-Ankomah also pointed to the need to address other costs associated with deploying and maintaining telecommunications infrastructure, stating that reducing unnecessary costs would create room for further investment in the sector.
