'Attempt to arrest lawyers from court unprofessional, unprecedented' - Prof Azar calls out EOCO
US-based legal luminary, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, popularly known as Kwaku Azar, has called out the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
In a post shared on Facebook on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, Kwaku Azar indicated that the attempt to arrest him on the premises of a court after representing his client was completely wrong.
He added that the attempt was not only “unprofessional” but also unheard of.
“Botched attempt to arrest lawyers coming from court is totally unprofessional and unprecedented,” he said.
He therefore called on the Attorney General to bring the persons responsible for the arrest to book, saying, “AG must rein in perpetrators.”
Meanwhile, EOCO has explained that its officers attempted to arrest Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah because he had failed to honour two invitations to assist with an ongoing investigation.
The attempted arrest took place on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the premises of the Accra High Court and was captured in videos circulating on social media.
According to EOCO in a statement dated September 23, 2026, the MP was invited twice in February 2026 to assist with the investigation but did not honour the invitations.
"The Office had previously invited Hon Baffour Awuah to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026. The invitations were not honoured," EOCO said.

The office said it subsequently took steps to secure his attendance in line with the law, describing today's attempted arrest as one of those steps.
"EOCO wishes to clarify that its officers, acting in the lawful discharge of their statutory responsibilities, attempted to effect the arrest of Hon. Baffour today, 23 September 2026, in connection with an ongoing investigation," it explained.
