See new transport fares released by GPRTU as 8% increase takes effect Saturday
Commuters across the country will pay higher fares from Saturday, September 26, 2026, following an 8% increase announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).
The two transport bodies have released the detailed fare schedule covering shared taxis, intra-city trotros and inter-city services.
Under the new arrangement, a standard intra-city fare of GH¢5 will increase to GH¢5.50, while passengers who currently pay GH¢10 will now pay GH¢11.
Public transport fares to increase by 8% from September 26
At the higher end of the intra-city fares, a journey costing GH¢30 will go up to GH¢32.40, while the highest listed fare of GH¢34 will increase to GH¢36.80.
For shared taxis, passengers travelling up to four kilometres will see the fare rise from GH¢2.60 to GH¢2.90.
A shared taxi journey of up to 40 kilometres, which currently costs GH¢18.70, will increase to GH¢20.20.
The adjustment will also affect passengers travelling between towns and cities.
An inter-city journey currently priced at GH¢25 will increase to GH¢27, while a GH¢100 fare will rise to GH¢108.
The highest fare listed on the new schedule, GH¢300, will increase to GH¢324.
The unions said the 8% adjustment was calculated based on the approved transport fares that came into effect on May 24, 2025.
They attributed the latest increase to changes in the ex-pump prices of petroleum products, rising spare parts costs, vehicle maintenance expenses and other operational costs.
However, the unions said government intervention on the price of diesel had helped to moderate the extent of the increase.
The GPRTU and GRTCC have directed transport operators to display the approved fare schedule at loading terminals and stations to ensure passengers are aware of the new charges.
They also warned drivers and operators against charging fares above the approved rates, saying offenders will face sanctions from the unions.
The revised fares will apply nationwide from Saturday, September 26, 2026.
