Asare Benched, Ati-Zigi Starts: Likely Black Stars XI against Côte d’Ivoire
Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to field his strongest starting XI against Côte d’Ivoire in Ghana’s first game of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on September 24, 2026.
With several key players withdrawing from the squad, the lineup is not expected to cause too many selection headaches, except in goal, where it remains highly unpredictable who will start.
However, based on his choice at the Mundial, Ati-Zigi is expected to keep his place in goal, as the coach appears to favour him over the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper when both are fit.

The centre-back positions will be occupied by the experienced Alexander Djiku, who could form a partnership with Jerome Opoku, who impressed at the World Cup.
The full-back positions are expected to be occupied by regular starters Gideon Mensah and Kojo Oppong Peprah, who will provide extra cover for the centre-backs while also contributing to the attack.
In midfield, Rahim Ibrahim and Kwasi Sibo are expected to serve as the anchors, with Caleb Yirenkyi joining them to stabilise the midfield and support the attack.
In attack, the flanks are expected to be occupied by Fatawu Issahaku and Ernest Nuamah, whose experience could help the team create chances and find the back of the net.
Brandon Thomas-Asante could lead the line as the centre-forward in what could be a 4-3-3 formation. However, coach Carlos Queiroz could make adjustments depending on how he assesses the opponent.
