2027 AFCON set to be moved to December - Reports

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations could be shifted to the Christmas and New Year period as concerns grow over preparations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, the tournament’s designated hosts. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has maintained that the competition will run from June 19 to July 17, 2027, across the three East African nations. However, reports suggest the governing body is exploring alternatives amid delays in infrastructure development and other preparations. CAF president Patrice Motsepe reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to the hosts at a strategic conference in Cape Verde, insisting the tournament would take place in the three countries. He also expressed confidence that it would be a successful edition. According to Le Monde, CAF has approached five countries about their potential readiness to step in if the current hosts fail to meet the required standards. Morocco, Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa and Egypt are reportedly among the options being considered. The Guardian has also reported that CAF officials have discussed postponing the tournament until the end of the year, following a similar scheduling arrangement for the previous edition. One major concern is Nairobi’s Talanta Sports Stadium, which remains unfinished as preparations continue. Motsepe is expected to visit the host countries again in January 2027, a trip that could prove decisive in assessing their readiness.
