‘Let the energy that fills our worship fuel nation-building’ - Mahama at Assemblies of God Congress

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Christians to translate their faith into practical service, calling on delegates at the 2026 World Assemblies of God Congress to return to their communities with a renewed commitment to nation-building.

Addressing thousands of delegates at the opening of the congress in Accra on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the president described Ghana’s hosting of the global event as historic.

He also stated that the impact of the gathering should extend beyond worship and sermons.

“Let the energy that fills our worship also fuel our nation-building. Let the hope we proclaim be reflected in our public conduct, our institutions and our service to humanity,” he said.

He also challenged delegates to invest in the next generation, adding that young people need guidance now more than ever as they navigate the pressures of modern society.

“Our young people are growing up in a world that is completely different from the world we grew in. Their world offers extraordinary possibilities, but it also brings on them intense pressures,” he said

The president urged churches to play a more active role in mentoring the youth.

“Let us be mentors who listen, offer opportunities to serve, and set examples of integrity that these young people can follow,” he stated.

Mahama further called on churches to remain places of refuge, stressing that spiritual leadership comes with a responsibility to protect vulnerable people.

“The church should also be a safe place for children and vulnerable people. Spiritual authority entails a duty of care; we must safeguard that trust through responsible conduct and accountability,” he said.

He also appealed for greater recognition of women’s contributions to the church, urging leaders to create more opportunities for them to serve.

“Let the wisdom, gifts and leadership of our women be heard and valued, because a fellowship preparing for the future must make room for all those whom God has equipped to serve,” he noted.

Concluding his address, Mahama reminded participants that the success of the congress would ultimately be measured by the lives they transform after returning home.

“The lasting story of this congress will be written in the lives that we touch after the closing prayer,” he said.
