‘Afenyo-Markin can no longer see top’ - Netizens react after court throws out Sammy Gyamfi case

Following the Accra High Court’s decision to throw out a GH¢15 million defamation suit filed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin against Sammy Gyamfi, netizens have reacted to the development. On October 14, 2026, the High Court dismissed the defamation case between Afenyo-Markin and Sammy Gyamfi because the Minority Leader failed to comply with the rules of court. Following the ruling, Afenyo-Markin, in a post shared on X, noted that the wheels of justice grind slowly, adding that he was certain he would eventually win the case. High Court throws out Afenyo-Markin’s GH¢15m defamation suit against Sammy Gyamfi “The Mills of Justice grind slowly but with 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗘𝗧𝗬,” Afenyo-Markin noted. Following the post, some netizens took to the comment section to mock the Minority Leader. According to several comments under Afenyo-Markin’s post, the Minority Leader and his lawyers appeared to be confused about the case, with some referencing an incident that occurred in 2024. It was alleged that, before the 2024 elections, Afenyo-Markin filed a case at the Supreme Court and obtained a ruling on the same day. Meanwhile, a netizen with the username Charles, while reacting to the Minority Leader’s post, wrote: “Grind slowly???? You made paneling within a few hours during your time, ooo honorable.” Background Afenyo-Markin filed the GH¢15 million defamation suit against Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited, the parent company of JoyNews, in August 2026. The case followed comments Gyamfi allegedly made during an edition of JoyNews' Newsfile programme, in which he described the Effutu MP as an "extortionist". Afenyo-Markin argued that the remarks were false and could damage his reputation as a lawyer, politician and public figure. Sammy Gyamfi’s lawyer explains why Afenyo-Markin’s GH¢15m suit was dismissed He asked the court to award him damages and order the defendants to publish a full retraction and an unconditional public apology. He also sought an injunction to prevent them from publishing the alleged defamatory words or statements with a similar meaning in the future. Additionally, he wanted the retraction and apology to be broadcast on JoyNews and published on the electronic and social media platforms through which the original statements were disseminated, with substantially the same prominence and reach.
