An old interview with the late Gamal Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, with an international media firm, Democracy Now, has resurfaced following reports of his death.
In the interview, which was conducted on March 6, 2007, when Ghana marked 50 years of independence from British colonial rule, Gamal spoke on several things, including his father’s fight for independence, his Pan-African vision and the 1966 coup that removed him from power.

Then, the foreign editor of the Egypt-based newspaper Al-Ahram Weekly, Gamal also discussed his father’s policies on education, healthcare, the circumstances surrounding the 1966 coup, and his life in exile.
On the issue of his father’s fight for independence, Gamal spoke about how his father returned to the Gold Coast after his involvement in the Pan-African movement in Britain and later formed the Convention People’s Party (CPP) to push for independence.
He also shared that his father believed Ghana’s independence would mean little without the liberation and unity of the rest of Africa.
Gamal credited his father with laying the foundations for Ghana’s industrial development through projects such as the Akosombo Dam and Tema Harbour.
He also highlighted the construction of schools and hospitals across the country, saying Nkrumah’s government sought to expand access to education and healthcare.
Gamal also discussed the meeting between his father and American civil rights activist Malcolm X, describing it as a meeting between two men who shared similar views on the struggles of oppressed people.
