Over 30 years of service to NPP: 10 things to know about John Boadu

Defeated in 2022, the former General Secretary has returned to lead Ghana’s opposition NPP alongside the man who unseated him (Justin Frimpong Kodua).

Four years ago, politician John Boadu suffered a stunning defeat that threatened to end his long service to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Now, he is back, occupying the party's highest organisational office.

From his rise through the party’s grassroots structures to controversies surrounding his public record, here are 10 things to know about John Boadu.

1. Illegal mining allegations tested his reputation

In 2021, Boadu became the subject of allegations linking him to illegal mining, popularly known as 'galamsey', after a video circulated on social media claiming that he owned excavators and equipment used for the activity.

Boadu denied the allegations and petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter.

The controversy attracted public attention because of his position as the NPP’s General Secretary and the national debate over illegal mining.

2. He rose through the NPP’s grassroots structures

Boadu built his political career through various positions within the NPP, gaining experience in grassroots organisation and party administration.

He served in roles including polling station chairman, National Youth Treasurer, National Finance Officer and National Youth Organiser before moving into other national-level positions.

His progression through the party’s structures helped establish his presence within its organisational hierarchy and paved the way for his eventual election as General Secretary.

3. He became General Secretary in 2018

Boadu was elected General Secretary of the NPP in 2018, becoming responsible for coordinating the party’s administrative activities and working with its regional and constituency structures.

The position placed him at the centre of the party’s organisation, particularly as it prepared for the 2020 general elections.

He retained the position until 2022, when he lost his re-election bid to Justin Kodua Frimpong.

4. He played a crucial role in the NPP’s election campaigns

Boadu’s experience in party organisation extended to election campaigns, including the NPP’s preparations for the 2016 and 2020 general elections.

His work within the party’s national structures gave him experience in grassroots mobilisation, constituency coordination and campaign organisation.

The NPP won the 2016 presidential election and retained power in 2020 under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

5. Justin Frimpong Kodua defeated him in 2022

One of the defining moments in Boadu’s political career came at the NPP’s national delegates conference in July 2022.

He lost the General Secretary election to Kodua, who polled 2,837 votes against Boadu’s 2,524.

The defeat ended Boadu’s four-year tenure in the position and marked a significant change in the party’s administrative leadership.

6. He was appointed Director-General of SIGA

After losing the NPP General Secretary position, Boadu moved into public-sector administration.

In December 2023, he was appointed Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) by then-President Akufo-Addo.

SIGA oversees the governance and performance of specified state-owned enterprises and other covered entities.

7. He continued to criticise the government over galamsey

Illegal mining remained a subject of Boadu’s public commentary, with the former General Secretary criticising the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over its handling of the problem.

His comments brought renewed attention to the issue, particularly because of the allegations levelled against him in 2021, which he denied.

8. He publicly supported Chairman Wontumi

Boadu also expressed support for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, following Wontumi’s legal troubles in an illegal-mining-related case.

In a statement reported by myjoyonline.cm in July 2026, Boadu described Wontumi as a ‘Political Prisoner’ and urged party supporters to remain calm and law-abiding while legal processes continued.

9. He returned to national leadership as NPP Chairman

Boadu made his return to the NPP’s national executive leadership by winning the National Chairman election on October 3, 2026.

He polled 2,888 votes, defeating Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, who received 2,408 votes, and Paul Afoko, who obtained 790 votes.

Boadu’s election also created an unusual political partnership with Kodua, the man who defeated him four years earlier.

10. He faces the task of preparing the NPP for 2028

Boadu’s return comes at a critical period for the NPP, which is seeking to rebuild after losing the 2024 general elections.

As National Chairman, he will be expected to work with Kodua and other party executives to strengthen the party’s structures, improve internal cohesion and mobilise supporters ahead of the 2028 elections.

The leadership will also have to address internal disagreements, reconnect with voters and develop an organisational strategy capable of supporting the party’s return to government.

For Boadu, the chairmanship represents both a political comeback and a test of his ability to translate years of party experience into a renewed organisational direction.

His tenure will be judged not only by his experience within the NPP but also by how effectively the party responds to the challenges ahead.
