‘Profound loss'- Nkrumah family pays glowing tribute to late Gamal
The Nkrumah family has paid tribute to Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, describing his death as a profound loss to the family and the wider community of friends, colleagues and readers who valued his work and contributions.
In a statement issued by Samia Nkrumah on October 15, 2026, announcing his passing, it said Gamal was a,"Respected journalist, writer and intellectual whose life was guided by the ideals of justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity".
According to the family, Gamal died peacefully in Cairo, Egypt, following a prolonged illness.
"He had been receiving care at a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke", the statement noted.
The family further described him as a man of “profound intellectual curiosity, independence of thought and quiet conviction,” noting that he carried forward his father’s enduring legacy in his own distinctive way while building a reputation grounded in his personal principles and achievements.
“As a journalist and commentator, he dedicated his voice and intellect to examining the political, social and cultural forces shaping Africa and the wider world,” the statement said.

The family said his wisdom, kindness and devotion to the values he held dear would remain an enduring source of inspiration.
It also remembered him with “immense love, gratitude and pride,” pointing out his commitment to the ideals that shaped his life and work.
The family expressed appreciation to the medical professionals and caregivers in Cairo who attended to Gamal throughout his illness, commending them for providing him with care and dignity.
It also thanked the governments and people of Ghana and Egypt for their support during the difficult period.
