'NDC grassroots supporters are hungry, angry and abandoned' – Agbey cautions
A National Democratic Congress (NDC) operative, James Agbey, has warned that the party risks losing support among its grassroots members if the government continues to neglect activists who worked to secure its victory in the 2024 general elections.
He has called on government appointees to take urgent action to address the concerns of party activists, many of whom he says are struggling with unemployment, financial hardship and frustration nearly two years into the NDC government.
In a public statement issued on October 16, 2026, Agbey said he was unhappy with what he described as the treatment of party operatives who remained loyal during the NDC’s time in opposition.
“When something is wrong, it is wrong. And as a long-standing political operative, I will say clearly: this does not look good on us as a party and government,” he stated.
He argued that the party’s grassroots support was weakening because of post-election disappointments and what he described as neglect by the government.
According to him, activists who worked to protect the party’s electoral interests during the 2024 elections have been left without meaningful opportunities to improve their livelihoods.
“Today, our party is in government but the very people who worked tirelessly to stop the NPP rigging machinery have been left to rot and die in hunger,” he said.
Agbey further alleged that some activists who had secured positions were working in abandoned offices and depended on occasional handouts to remain engaged with the party.
He also accused some government appointees of prioritising family members and close associates over party loyalists who contributed to the NDC’s electoral victory.
“The feeling out there at the base is that ‘we have been used and dumped’,” he said.
Agbey called on government appointees to pay greater attention to the concerns of grassroots supporters, arguing that their demands centred on access to opportunities to earn a living rather than temporary financial assistance.
“All that these party activists are asking for is opportunities to be able to fend for themselves,” he stated.
He urged the government to implement practical measures to address the concerns rather than rely on promises and political statements.
Agbey warned that continued neglect could lead to growing resentment among party supporters and potentially affect the NDC’s electoral fortunes in the next general elections.
“To imply that these party activists can be used and dumped is a clear indicator of amateurish political judgment,” he said.
He added, “More appropriately, I call for an urgent action or we will have ourselves to blame come the electioneering season.”
Agbey further cautioned that the consequences of neglecting the party’s grassroots base could be significant if the concerns were not addressed.
