Death of Joseph Owusu: CCTV captures men dumping 24-year-old Ghanaian’s body in Bronx

More details have emerged surrounding the death of 24-year-old Ghanaian Joseph Owusu, whose body was found at a dump site in the Bronx, New York.

Surveillance footage sighted by GhanaWeb on November 6, 2026, and shared by American news outlet ABC7, captured two people suspected to be adult men removing a large black duffel bag containing Owusu's body from the boot of a white saloon car.

The footage, reportedly recorded overnight, shows the two individuals dragging the bag onto the pavement before driving away.

The following day, another man was captured placing the black duffel bag on a metal stretcher and wheeling it away. Owusu's body was later found at a dump site by a man searching for scrap metal.

The deceased's brother, Kojo Yeboah, has called for justice, saying the family is struggling to come to terms with his death.

“I need justice for Joseph. I want the truth to come out because my brother didn't deserve to die the way he did. He's only 24. He had a lot of living to do. I cried till my nose was bleeding because I couldn't eat,” he said.

Yeboah was shown the surveillance footage of his brother's body being removed from the car boot and asked whether he recognised the individuals involved.

He said he did not know them despite watching the footage several times.

“No, I don't recognize anybody. I wish, but these people are just people I've never seen before. I watched it plenty of times. I just let it play just to see if anybody would not try to send it to the signs to see if they know anything,” he stated.

He also spoke about his brother's character, describing him as someone who was loved by many and had a passion for music.

“He was loved by everyone. He would play the piano like hours and hours and just like make sure that he didn't make a mistake,” he said.

The family said they had spoken to Owusu early the previous week and had no reason to suspect that anything was wrong or report him missing.

They were also preparing to attend a vigil for 15-year-old Ghanaian Javits Frimpong, who was killed in the Bronx, when officers of the New York Police Department (NYPD) arrived at their home and informed them that Owusu had been killed.

According to the family, Owusu was a devoted church member who served as an organist at their church in the Bronx. He also worked as a direct support worker in the homes of people with disabilities and studied computer science.

His brother said the family was struggling to cope with the loss, particularly his mother's grief.

“He's not going to come just opening the door just to come here and just come play the piano or just like be with us and I don't know how that's going to fill the void because it's a void right now in the family but I'm just trying to stay strong for my mom because my mom is going through it. I'm going through it. My mom is going through it,” he added.

ABC7 reported that the medical examiner had yet to determine the cause of Owusu's death and that the NYPD had also not classified the case as a homicide.
