Dear GhanaWeb: I had two children with my friend’s husband

Dear GhanaWeb, I am a mother of two children, and the father of both kids is the husband of my childhood best friend. Before you judge me, please hear my story. My friend and I grew up together, sharing everything. Years later, she met a man, fell in love, and planned her wedding. What she didn’t know was that I had already started seeing him behind her back before they got married. A month before their wedding, I discovered I was pregnant. I stood beside her as a bridesmaid, smiling in all the wedding photos while secretly carrying her fiancé’s child. I told myself it would end after that, but it didn’t. Three years later, I became pregnant again with the same man. He had money, took care of responsibilities, and I convinced myself that keeping the pregnancies was the right thing to do. Whenever my friend asked about the father of my children, I lied and claimed he lived outside Ghana. She often asked to meet him, but I always found excuses. At first, I was only curious; I wanted to experience what my friend was enjoying. But somewhere along the way, I fell in love. He always knew the right things to say and do to make me feel special. Now everything has changed. The same man who once showered me with attention barely acknowledges me. He no longer cares about me or our children. He ignores my calls and messages, leaving me to carry the burden alone. Whenever I threaten to tell his wife the truth, he laughs. He reminds me that I am the one who will look bad because I betrayed my childhood friend. He knows I am afraid of the shame and the consequences, and he uses that against me. Meanwhile, I watch him spoil his wife and their children. He takes them on outings, buys them gifts, and recently surprised her with a brand-new car. Seeing that hurts because my children are his too, yet he acts as if they don’t exist. I don’t want my children taken away from me. I want them with me, and I want their father to step up and support them the way he supports his other family. Right now, I am unemployed and struggling to survive while he lives comfortably. I know I have made mistakes. I know I betrayed a friendship that meant everything to me. But my children didn’t ask to be born into this situation. So now I’m stuck between protecting a secret that has lasted for years and exposing the truth in hopes of getting the support my children deserve. If you were in my shoes, what would you do?
