‘Halt any plans to build museums’ - Kumchacha urges gov’t to focus on pressing needs

Founder and leader of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Kumchacha, has urged the government to put any plans to build museums in honour of Ghanaian legends on hold. He argued that such projects could attract public criticism over what many may consider misplaced priorities. According to the preacher, although there have been calls from players in Ghana’s creative arts industry for museums to be established to preserve the legacies of the country’s celebrated musicians and other cultural icons, the government should not take responsibility for constructing such facilities. Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on August 8, 2026, Prophet Kumchacha said the government could face backlash if it becomes directly involved in the construction of museums at a time when the country grapple with challenges such as poor drainage systems, flooding and inadequate road infrastructure. He explained that ordinary Ghanaians could question the government’s decision to prioritise the construction of museums when there are pressing infrastructure challenges that require immediate attention. ‘70 to 80 people packed like sardines’ - Kumchacha on plight of Ghana's prisoners “The museum that is being championed, if the government gets involved in building it, people will criticise the government and say there are more important things to address, such as constructing proper drainage systems and improving road networks. The government may not have peace of mind because of the backlash. For that reason, the government should halt any plans to build the museum to avoid unnecessary criticism,” he noted. Prophet Kumchacha further questioned why the families of Ghanaian legends, together with stakeholders in the creative arts industry, could not take the initiative to establish such museums without relying on the government. He cited the Bob Marley Museum in Jamaica as an example, noting that the facility dedicated to the late Jamaican reggae icon was established by his immediate family. According to him, if the families of Ghanaian legends and industry stakeholders are convinced that museums are necessary to preserve the legacies of the country’s cultural icons, they should consider taking responsibility for building and managing such facilities themselves. Prophet Kumchacha also appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to reconsider any plans his administration may have to construct museums dedicated to Ghanaian legends.
