Uproar as some Kumasi transport operators increase fares by 23%

Some transport operators in parts of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region have increased transport fares by 23 percent. Commercial drivers are now charging GH¢8 for the journey from Sofoline to Kronom, up from the previous fare of GH¢6.50. Transport fares from Sofoline to Suame have also increased from GH¢4.50 to GH¢6. The increase, which took effect on Monday, has since sparked an uproar among many passengers. OTEC News reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng, who visited some transport terminals on Tuesday, reported that the fare increases were not limited to the two routes, as several other routes had also recorded increases. The commercial drivers attributed the increases to the rising cost of fuel, spare parts and other operational expenses. Meanwhile, passengers are calling on the Ministry of Transport to explain how the increases took effect without any prior announcement.
