Otto Addo should have been sacked earlier after AFCON failure - Andre Ayew

Andre Ayew believes Otto Addo should have been dismissed earlier as Ghana coach, particularly after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Speaking on the Obi One Podcast hosted by former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi, Ayew said the decision to retain Addo after the AFCON qualification failure created a difficult situation for the national team. “I think that should have happened long before. I think when you're Ghana and not qualified for AFCON, you can't call it better. That's my conjecture,” Ayew said. The former Black Stars captain, who knows Addo from his time with the national team, acknowledged that the coach eventually guided Ghana to the 2026 World Cup but questioned the decision to keep him in charge after the team's poor run. “I know him. We played, not really in a game together, but I played under him when he was an assistant, as a coach, etc. But after that he was able to qualify us for the World Cup,” he said. Ayew pointed to Ghana's struggles after qualifying for the World Cup, arguing that the Black Stars went through a difficult period before eventually recovering. “So then, the bad thing is, then we had about five or six really tough matches just after and then we fell,” he added. For Ayew, the Black Stars belong to the entire country and everyone involved must share the same objective of winning. “The Black Stars is for the whole country, and we want to win. But there's a process to win,” he said. Ayew also acknowledged Addo's efforts during his second spell as Ghana coach but maintained that the timing of his departure was the main issue.
