Dear GhanaWeb: I accidentally stabbed my fiancé, now his family is after my life

Dear GhanaWeb,
I am a 35-year-old woman and I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.
I have been dating this man since 2024. We met at a hotel where I had gone for a business meeting. At the time, he was working as an assistant supervisor.
He was very jovial, calm and smart, and somehow always knew the right things to say at the right time. We became friends, and before long, he asked me out.
To be honest, he was not my type. We were also not on the same level financially. But I believed love was not supposed to be about money or class, so I decided to give him a chance.
At the time, he told me he earned about GH¢1,200 a month, while I was earning almost GH¢21,000. The difference was huge, but I didn’t care.
A few months into the relationship, I discovered that he had an HND. I wanted to help him improve his life, so I used my connections to help him obtain a degree and later secured him a job where I work.
His salary was not much initially, but I kept helping him until he was earning about GH¢8,000.
I watched his life change before my eyes. He became happier and more confident, and I was happy that I had played a part in it.
He eventually proposed to me last year, and I was extremely excited. We started making plans to get married.
I never really allowed him to spend his money on household things. I fed him, clothed him, got him a car and even helped him secure a comfortable place to stay.
I did all these things because I believed I was taking care of my man. I never thought I would one day regret loving someone this much.
Then, somewhere in November, a woman came to my workplace and caused a scene.
She had two children with her and was accusing me of snatching her husband.
At first, I thought she was joking or had mistaken me for someone else. But she was extremely angry and was calling me all sorts of names. Security eventually had to sack her from the premises.
My fiancé was not around when the incident happened, so I called him and asked about the woman.
He told me he had no idea who she was and suggested that she had probably mistaken me for somebody else and I believed him.
One day, I received a WhatsApp message from a number I didn’t know. I opened it and saw a wedding photograph. It was my fiancé standing beside the exact same woman who had come to my workplace.
They were not just a couple in the picture. They were married. I confronted him immediately, but instead of admitting the truth, he told me the photograph was either AI-generated or photoshopped.
That was when I completely lost my temper. I slapped him. He retaliated and hit me.
I tried to escape from him and ran into the hall, but he followed me and continued trying to hit me. In the middle of the struggle, I grabbed a knife that was on the table and somehow stabbed him in the stomach.
I swear I did not plan to kill him. It happened in the heat of the moment, and till today, I am not proud of what happened. I immediately took him to the hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive.
There was CCTV footage in my hall, and after investigations, the footage helped establish what happened before the stabbing. I was able to prove that I had been trying to escape from the attack.
The police eventually stopped pursuing the matter against me.
But that has not brought me peace. His family has refused to leave me alone. They call me almost every day, threatening me and accusing me of snatching their husband and taking his life.
They have even started coming to my workplace. On some occasions, they pour strange substances around the office, break eggs there and perform other things while accusing me of destroying their family.
The problem is that I cannot simply resign and disappear. I have a very important position at my workplace, and leaving would affect my career significantly.
I have lost the man I thought I was going to marry, and I am still struggling to process everything that happened.
I honestly don’t know what I am supposed to do anymore. Should I continue staying at my workplace and risk these people coming after me, or should I walk away from everything I have worked so hard to build? I need your advice please.
