'I thought I had gone mad' – Ofori Amponsah recalls first weed experience
Ghanaian highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has recounted a frightening experience he had after smoking weed and consuming alcohol for the first time while he was in school.
Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Atuu on August 23, 2026, the musician disclosed that he has always been a reserved person and was raised in a Godly background, which influenced his approach to certain activities within the music industry.
“I’m a very reserved person and I’m from a Godly background. Some things that people go deep into for the music, I didn’t go that deep,” he said.
Ofori Amponsah, however, noted that he does not consider alcohol consumption unusual and said he does not view weed as inherently bad.
He recalled that his first encounter with weed happened during his school days after his friends persuaded him to try it, despite a warning from his mother.
“I remember when I was in school, my mother told me that if I took weed, I would run mad,” he recounted.
According to the musician, his friends later convinced him that his mother's warning was untrue when they went out for entertainment.
“One day, when we went for entertainment, my friends convinced me that my mother was lying to me that I would run mad,” he said.

Ofori Amponsah mentioned that he eventually smoked the weed and later consumed two bottles of alcohol, after which he became disoriented and struggled to remember what happened.
“After smoking the weed, I was given two bottles of alcohol and I drank all of it in addition. I didn’t know what was going on with me,” he recalled.
The Otoolege hitmaker shared that the experience became even more frightening when a car horn startled him while he was on the road.
He said that moment reminded him of his mother's warning and made him believe that what she had predicted had happened.
“I was the entertainment prefect, but I don’t really remember the things I did there. A car blew its horn at me on the road. I remembered my mother told me I would run mad and it has happened,” he stated.
Ofori Amponsah added that the incident frightened him so much that he decided not to pursue such activities further.
“That was my first time and it frightened me, so I didn’t go deeper into it,” he added.
