Sky Train Case: Asamoah, Ameyaw-Akumfi given third extension to file defences

An Accra High Court has, for the third time, given former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Chief Executive Officer, Solomon Asamoah, and former GIIF Board Chairman, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, more time to file their defences in the ongoing Sky Train case. The two accused persons have been directed to file their respective defences by September 23, 2026. Sky Train Case: Ex-GIIF CEO files Supreme Court application after failing to file defence The latest development was disclosed by Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, in an update on the case. “CASE UPDATE: The Republic v Solomon Asamoah & Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi. The High Court has, for the 3rd time, given the two Accused Persons more time to file their respective defences. They’re to file by September 23, 2026,” he said on Facebook. According to him, the trial court has already given the accused persons two previous extensions after dismissing their submissions of no case. On July 2, 2026, the court dismissed the submissions of no case filed by Asamoah and Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi and directed them to file their defences within 21 days if they wished to do so. “On July 2, the trial Court dismissed the two Accused Persons’ submissions of no case, and directed them to, within 21 days, file their respective defences if they wish to,” Dr Srem-Sai stated. He said the 21-day period expired without either of the accused persons filing a defence. Instead, they filed applications seeking a stay of proceedings. The court subsequently granted them another 21 days on July 30 to file their defences, bringing the total period granted to 42 days. However, after the second deadline expired, lawyers for Asamoah filed two applications at the Supreme Court on August 21. One of the applications seeks an order of certiorari to quash the trial court’s decision dismissing Asamoah’s submission of no case and the variation of his bail conditions. “The first application is for an order of certiorari to quash the dismissal of the submission of no case and the variation of Solomon Asamoah’s bail conditions,” Dr Srem-Sai said. The second application seeks to halt proceedings at the High Court until the Supreme Court determines the certiorari application. “The second application is for an order of interlocutory injunction pending the determination of the certiorari application,” he added. Here's the latest update on the Sky Train case Despite the applications before the Supreme Court, Dr Srem-Sai said neither Asamoah nor Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi had filed their defence before the trial court.
