'The elephant has no northern or southern leg' - Afoko rejects regional divisions in NPP

Aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has stressed that the party must avoid geographical divisions if it is to regain its strength and move forward. Using the party’s elephant symbol as an analogy, Afoko said every region forms part of the same political organisation and must be treated as equally important. “The elephant has no northern leg and southern leg. Every leg belongs to the same elephant, and every leg must be strong if the elephant is to move forward,” he said. His comments come amid suggestions that the NPP’s next National Chairman should not come from northern Ghana because the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, also hails from the northern part of the country. Speaking after filing his nomination on August 25, 2026, Afoko rejected that argument, insisting that the NPP is a national party whose leadership should not be determined by geographical considerations. He urged delegates to focus instead on the competence, integrity, experience and temperament of each candidate when choosing the party’s next National Chairman. “Let us judge every candidate by competence, integrity, experience, temperament and the ability to do the job,” he said. Afoko campaign rejects regional bias in NPP chairman contest According to Afoko, the party’s Constitution does not establish geographical barriers to leadership positions, and the NPP’s history does not support the idea that people from the same part of the country cannot serve together at the highest levels of the party. He stressed that Dr Bawumia was elected to lead the NPP rather than represent northern Ghana, and said his own ambition was similarly national in scope. “Dr Bawumia was not elected to represent northern Ghana. He was elected to lead the New Patriotic Party. “And I am not seeking to become Chairman of northern Ghana. I am seeking to become National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party of Ghana,” he stated. Afoko said the party’s victories in every region should be celebrated equally, arguing that every NPP vote contributes to the party’s collective strength. He therefore urged members and delegates to put aside regional considerations and focus on building a united NPP capable of winning support across the country. “So let us not divide ourselves by geography when our greatest task is to unite Ghana behind the New Patriotic Party,” he said.
