Ghana must change approach to housing delivery - Ahmed Ibrahim

Newly appointed Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Ahmed Ibrahim, has raised concerns over Ghana’s inability to meet its housing targets, comparing the country’s performance with that of Côte d’Ivoire. Speaking at his official swearing-in on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, Ibrahim lamented that while Côte d’Ivoire has reportedly built about 50,000 houses over the past decade, Ghana has struggled to complete even 15,000. “Why is it that Côte d’Ivoire, in the last 10 years, has built about 50,000 houses and Ghana, from 2012 to date, even 5,000 we can’t build? Even 1,500 we can’t complete?” he asked. He further criticised what he described as partisan and parochial approaches that have hindered progress in the housing sector. “I recognise this significant responsibility today. The ministry has an important mandate, and the work we do directly affects the lives of the people of Ghana. What is wrong with us as a country? Too partisan, too parochial, too selfish,” he said. Ibrahim pledged to complete stalled housing projects and initiate new ones in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision, assuring the public of a renewed commitment to addressing Ghana’s housing deficit. “We need to come together and bury ourselves in the vision of the President.
