Here is why Majority Leader remains in his seat despite leadership change

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has clarified why the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, continues to occupy his seat despite reports of a leadership change, stressing that the proper communication has not yet been made to the House. Speaking on the floor of Parliament on August 24, 2026, Bagbin explained that a recent message describing the leadership as “acting” was erroneous, noting that the President has no authority to announce changes in parliamentary leadership. “The communication says acting because the President has no authority to communicate the change of the leadership of the House to the Speaker. And so, it was actually done in error,” he said. That is why you still see that the Majority Leader is still in his seat, because he’s still the Majority Leader, until otherwise communicated by the party and then decided by the caucus and the information passed on,” Bagbin added. “And as you know, the practice is that the party, under the hand of the General Secretary, communicates that decision of the party to the Speaker,” he added.
