NPP challenges Muntaka over claim that wanted suspect was elected youth organizer

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has challenged claims by the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, that a prime suspect in the 2024 election violence at Nyankpala was elected the party’s Youth Organiser in Tolon. The NPP's Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, speaking to Citi FM on August 26, 2026, said the party has no Youth Organiser in Tolon by the name mentioned by the minister. 2020, 2024 Election Violence: 13 suspects at large - Interior Minister According to him, an individual called Ibrahim Abdel Wahab is the elected Youth Organiser in Tolon Constituency. “First and foremost, the minister did not speak the truth, and anybody who mentioned that within the discussion in the dialogue did not know the facts. Let me place this on record… there is nobody named Copshe or Abdul Latif as a Youth Organizer in Tolon,” he said. Haruna Mohammed said the party did not elect or appoint anyone by that name as an officer in the Tolon Constituency. “We have not elected such a person as a Youth Organizer in Tolon. Our Youth Organiser is Ibrahim Abdel Wahab. We don’t have such a name. “We have not appointed anybody called Alhaji Abdul Latif as an officer of our party. Let that be on record. If the proper records are out, I am ready to speak to it,” he added. He further stated that Abdel Wahab was physically present during the 2024 general election. Asked whether he knew the person referred to by the Interior Minister, Haruna Mohammed said the man previously held the Youth Organiser position but is no longer the constituency Youth Organiser. “He has not contested for the position of Youth Organizer and as to whether I know him, yes, I know him. He previously held that position but not now. It expired at the time we were conducting the constituency elections in July,” he explained. His comments were in response to claims by Muntaka Mubarak on Monday, August 24, 2026, that Alhaji Abdul Latif Copshe, a prime suspect in the violence at Nyankpala in the Tolon Constituency during the 2024 general election, was declared the winner of the NPP's Constituency Youth Organiser election despite reportedly fleeing the community after the incident. The violence reportedly resulted in one death and injuries to several others. “The prime suspects in that matter are Alhaji Abdul Latif Copshe and one Sankara. Efforts to apprehend the suspects who, since the incident, have relocated from the community, are yet to be successful,” the minister said. He was declared the winner in the said election and retained as the constituency Youth Organiser,” he added.
