‘They were sacking me, but I kept going back’ – Jubed recalls singing at Accra Mall

Ghanaian musician Jubed has opened up about the lengths he went to pursue music as a teenager, revealing that he would sometimes run away from home to perform at Accra Mall for money. According to the artiste, his passion for music started at a young age, and despite being repeatedly chased away by authorities at the mall, he kept returning to sing. Speaking during a discussion with Kojo Manuel on A Mad Network, Jubed recalled how he would go to Accra Mall with his guitar and perform for shoppers, sometimes making about GH₵50. “Growing up, there were times when I would run away from the house and be at the Accra Mall. I would go there and sing and people would be giving me GH₵50. They would sack me, but I would go back,” he said. Jubed explained that the spot where he performed was close to the cinema area at the mall, where there was a game area and photo booth before the elevator was installed. He mentioned that the owners of the space were often around and would chase him away whenever they found him performing there. “I would rather sing. They would sack me because where I used to sing was more of a place where the owners were always around,” he recounted. According to him, whenever he was chased from Accra Mall, he would move to the National Theatre and continue performing despite being warned against it. “When I was going there, they used to warn me, but I kept going,” he stated. Most of the competition in the music industry is unhealthy - Juned Jubed revealed that one man who enjoyed his performances would alert him whenever the mall authorities were coming after him. “There was this guy who actually liked the way I sang, so he’s the one who alerted me when they were coming after me. If he’s not there, I don’t go. I usually call him on the phone and ask him the time I should come around and when I make money for the day, I tip him some,” he explained. The musician noted that he usually performed with his guitar and was particularly fond of singing songs by Canadian pop star Justin Bieber. “I used to sing with the guitar and I did Justin Bieber most of the time. I really liked him those times and I was about 16 years old,” he shared. Jubed disclosed that he maintained the routine for almost two years before one incident involving a concerned father forced him to reconsider his activities. “I sang there for almost two years. There was a day my dad had to come there, held my hand and took me away in front of everybody,” he recalled. However, his persistence eventually paid off as he began meeting people who recognised his talent and offered him opportunities to perform at different events. He added that he eventually stopped going to Accra Mall after people began approaching him for performances, allowing him to pursue music more professionally. “I stopped going there when I met people who wanted me to sing at places.
