Mustapha Hamid sets record straight on Bawumia ‘Islamization’ allegations
Aspiring First National Vice Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has dismissed claims that former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, will convert the country to an Islamic state when voted to become president.
He urged Ghanaians to assess Dr Bawumia based on his competence and tolerance to all religious fraternities.
“When we see Bawumia, we should see a patriotic Ghanaian seeking an opportunity to serve, not an Islamic project," he stated.
Speaking at the Danquah Institute’s Liberty Lecture in Accra under the theme “One Nation, Many Faiths: Emerging Threats to Religious Tolerance in Ghana,” on August 25, 2026, Dr Mustapha Abdul‑Hamid stressed that Dr Bawumia seeks to serve the nation, not to advance any Islamic agenda.

He emphasised that claims suggesting a Bawumia presidency would turn Ghana into an Islamic state are not only false but an insult to the country’s constitution and collective values.
"If you allow yourself to cross the boundaries of people’s faith, you will find the humanity in people and the common humanity that binds all of us. There will undoubtedly be people willing to spend money and manufacture fear by claiming that a Bawumia presidency would turn Ghana into an Islamic state.
"...That suggestion is not merely false; it is an insult to our constitution, our history, and the good sense of Ghanaians," he said.
The former information minister and Islamic scholar also emphasised that political choices in the country have generally not been dictated by religion.
"Religious leaders must therefore refuse to become recruiting sergeants for political parties," he added.

Hamid further called on Ghanaians to prioritise competence in evaluating political leaders and to resist efforts that could undermine national unity through religious division.
"Let us say an emphatic no to anyone who seeks to lead us away from these secular responsibilities and into the dangerous politics of religious fear and hatred," he noted.
The remarks come amid public debate over issues including the proposed introduction of Arabic as an optional subject in basic schools and discussions on interest-free banking, which some have framed as steps toward Islamisation.
Hamid and other speakers have rejected such characterisations, framing the initiatives instead in educational and economic terms while cautioning against the political exploitation of religious tensions.
