In his most recent briefing, amid challenges surrounding the prosecutorial powers of his office, Agyebeng appeared to signal that he had left the question of his continued stay in office to fate. As the nation awaits Agyebeng’s address today, August 26, 2026, here are highlights from some of his earlier press briefings that made headlines: 1. Ofori-Atta re-declared a fugitive On June 2, 2025, Agyebeng re-declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a wanted person and fugitive from justice after he failed to appear before the OSP for an investigative interview. The Special Prosecutor announced that processes had been triggered for an Interpol Red Notice and extradition proceedings to secure Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana. Agyebeng also rejected the former minister’s medical justification, insisting that the OSP required his physical attendance. “We want him here physically and we insist on it,” he said. He further maintained that a suspect could not dictate the manner in which an investigative authority conducted its work. Speaking about public confidence in the OSP, he cited findings that more than 70% of Ghanaians wanted an independent institution to fight corruption separately from the Attorney-General’s Office, while more than 50% trusted the OSP more than any other institution in the fight against corruption. “And with this my job is done,” he said. He subsequently called on civil society and the public to take ownership of the OSP and ensure that the institution survives beyond his tenure. “However, I have started counting down my days to when I depart as Special Prosecutor,” he added. 4. OSP announces charges against Ofori-Atta, five others over SML On October 30, 2025, Agyebeng announced that the OSP would charge Ken Ofori-Atta and five other former government officials following its investigation into contracts involving the Ghana Revenue Authority and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML). The OSP said its investigation had uncovered alleged corruption, abuse of office, statutory breaches and procurement irregularities. “The outcome of the investigation is that the OSP will charge the following persons with various corruption and corruption-related offences before the end of November 2025,” Agyebeng announced. The Special Prosecutor also announced plans to recover GH¢125 million from SML, describing the amount as unjust enrichment arising from alleged overpayments. The announcement marked another major development in the OSP’s investigation into the SML contracts and further placed Ofori-Atta at the centre of one of the office’s most closely watched corruption cases.
