UBA graduate to receive N500,000, ambassadorial role after viral incident

A UBA graduate who went viral after addressing the bank's chairman, Tony Elumelu, by his first name is set to receive N500,000 and an ambassadorial role from an aide to the Delta State Governor.

An aide to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Ossai Success, announced the support package following the public debate surrounding the young woman's interaction in a facebook post on Tuesday August 26, 2026.

The package includes N500,000 cash, flight tickets to Asaba, accommodation in a five-star hotel and a guided tour of development projects in Delta State.

She will also be given an ambassadorial role with the Delta Social Media Summit.

Success said the gesture was meant to encourage the graduate following the criticism she received online.

“She made a mistake, but we don’t need to torment her daily. She needs our support,” he said in a Facebook post.

He added that the support would also give the young woman an opportunity to share her side of the story.

The graduate became the subject of public discussion after a video from UBA's Graduate Management Accelerated Programme graduation ceremony showed her addressing Elumelu as “Tony”.

Elumelu corrected her during the interaction, and the video quickly spread across social media.

While some people criticised the graduate for what they described as a lack of respect, others defended her, arguing that addressing people by their first names was common in some corporate settings.

The latest offer has also sparked mixed reactions online, with some praising the support package while others questioned the decision to reward her following the viral incident.
