Adjoa Obuobia commends Akandoh on GMTF's one-year milestone
The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has commended the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for his guidance, patience and commitment to the work of the Fund as it marks one year of full operations.
In a statement dated September 3, 2026, Darko-Opoku praised Akandoh for his role in helping the GMTF navigate difficult decisions and challenges over the past year.
“Hon. Minister, today I am giving you your flowers VERY LOUDLY! Thank you for the guidance, the candour, the patience and the many moments,” she said.
She described Akandoh as a key partner in shaping decisions affecting the Fund, stressing that his contribution had gone beyond his formal responsibilities as Minister for Health.
Darko-Opoku said the achievements recorded by the GMTF during its first year had involved difficult conversations, lengthy meetings and challenging decisions that were not always visible to the public.

“What people see is the finished work, but they don’t always see the conversations behind it; the long meeting hours, the back-and-forth, the dawn phone calls, the tough questions and most importantly, the very difficult decisions we have sometimes had to sit down and make,” she stated.
She said Akandoh had consistently demonstrated a willingness to listen, challenge ideas and work collaboratively towards decisions that would benefit the Fund and Ghana’s health sector in the long term.
While celebrating the milestone, Darko-Opoku stressed that the GMTF was not resting on its achievements, indicating that more work remained ahead.
“One year down… and knowing us, we are definitely not about to start relaxing now! In fact, we are just about starting,” she said.
She further prayed for God’s continued blessing, strength, wisdom and grace for Akandoh as he continues to lead the health sector.
