21-year-old drowns after cow triggers panic on Volta Lake canoe

A 21-year-old man has drowned in the Volta Lake after a cow caused panic aboard a canoe travelling along the Isaka Kura-Tonka-Yeji route in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region. According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at Isaka Kura, a suburb of Yeji. The canoe was carrying six people, including the operator, as well as a tricycle and a cow when the incident occurred. The canoe operator, identified as Promise, said the group had set off from Isaka Kura towards Tonka and Yeji when the cow suddenly began struggling inside the canoe. One of the passengers, identified as 21-year-old Mathias Kpodovia, drowned after jumping into the water. Promise said he immediately alerted community members, who formed a search team to look for Kpodovia. After several hours of searching, the team retrieved the body of the deceased from the lake. The body was subsequently conveyed to Matthias Hospital by the police for further investigation.
