15,000 health workers earn average GH¢600 salaries – HSWU

The Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU) has called for an urgent review of salaries in the health sector, warning that some workers earn as little as GH¢600 a month.

The union said low wages and delays in negotiating better conditions of service are putting significant pressure on health workers, particularly those in the private sector.

General Secretary of the HSWU, Franklin Owusu-Ansah, said about 15,000 health workers are affected, with many earning wages far below what is required to meet their basic needs.

“We have about 15,000 workers whose salaries specifically average around GH¢600, and in the private sector it is nothing to write home about,” he said.

He said workers in the private health sector earn between GH¢500 and GH¢1,000 per month, describing the situation as a major concern for the industry.

“People earn between GH¢500 and GH¢1,000 per month and this is what today we are saying, all of us together with civil society, join hands with the unions to say that we should be paid living wages in Ghana,” he stated.

The union is calling for the payment of living wages and stronger negotiations on salaries and working conditions across the health sector.

Owusu-Ansah said low pay could also affect the ability of health facilities to attract and retain skilled workers, particularly as the cost of living continues to rise.

The union is therefore calling on the government, employers and civil society organisations to support efforts to improve wages across the health sector.
