Dr Agnes Lartey leads push to take social protection to vulnerable Ghanaians
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has intensified efforts to make social protection services more accessible to vulnerable persons by taking government interventions directly to communities.
The initiative formed part of a Community Dialogue Series organised by the Ministry in collaboration with the Office of the Head of the Local Government Service (OHLGS) for residents of Chorkor and Mamprobi in the Ablekuma South Municipality on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
In a post shared on Facebook on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the Ministry said the engagement was aimed at improving public understanding of government’s social protection programmes while giving residents an opportunity to raise concerns and obtain information on interventions available to support individuals and households facing poverty and vulnerability.
Speaking at the engagement, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, said social protection must be integrated into community development rather than being viewed solely as the responsibility of central government.
“Social protection should not be viewed solely as the responsibility of central government institutions but should be recognised as an integral part of local development and community building,” she said.
She said the community dialogue was also facilitating the registration and renewal of eligible vulnerable and disabled persons under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), helping to improve their access to healthcare.
Dr Lartey further announced that a free national inter-agency consultation, MAP-UL, was ongoing and available to eligible community members, urging residents to take advantage of the initiative.

She also encouraged eligible residents to use the free NHIS registration and renewal services to ensure they could access healthcare whenever the need arose.
The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Okoe Vanderpuije, commended the Ministry for taking the dialogue to the community, saying direct engagement with residents would enable government to better understand their challenges and identify practical solutions.
He urged residents to actively participate in government programmes and communicate their concerns to the relevant authorities.
Officials from the Ministry and other stakeholders also educated participants on issues including domestic violence, child marriage, teenage pregnancy, human trafficking, child protection, the NHIS and the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) reassessment exercise.
Residents of Chorkor and Mamprobi used the engagement to ask questions and provide feedback on social protection programmes and other challenges affecting their communities.
The Ministry said concerns raised during the dialogue would inform efforts to improve the delivery and accessibility of social protection interventions at the community level.
