Kwadaso MP defends Bawumia, rebukes Owusu Bempah over recent comments

The Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Prof. Kingsley Nyarko, has mounted a strong defence of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, rebuking popular preacher Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah over his recent public attacks, anti-Muslim comments, and claims of spiritual influence over Ghana’s political outcomes. Dr Nyarko’s reaction comes in the wake of allegations by Rev. Owusu Bempah accusing Dr Bawumia of masterminding a plot involving NPP Nasara members to storm his church and cause disruption. The preacher had also suggested that a Muslim should not be elected President and claimed that his spiritual power was responsible for sending the NPP into opposition in the 2024 general elections. In an interview with journalists in Kwadaso following the commissioning of a six-unit classroom block at the Nyankyerenease Methodist Basic School, the Kwadaso lawmaker dismissed the preacher’s allegations as divisive, baseless and driven by personal animosity. Rejecting Rev. Owusu Bempah’s assertions regarding Dr Bawumia’s presidential ambitions, Prof. Nyarko stated that the choice of Ghana’s leadership rests solely in the hands of God and the Ghanaian electorate, not individual clergymen. “Rev. Owusu Bempah is not God and cannot decide who should lead Ghana as President. If God says yes, who is he to say no? If Bawumia is destined to become President, nobody can stop it,” he said. The MP accused the founder of Glorious Word Power Ministries International of displaying prejudice towards the Muslim community, warning that such commentary threatens the nation’s peaceful religious coexistence. “Owusu Bempah looks like someone who has a personal hatred for the Muslim community, and that is not how a country should be run or how a true man of God should behave. He should stay in his lane, focus on preaching the word of God, and stop creating divisions,” the MP urged. Challenging the preacher to redirect his platform towards national development, Dr Nyarko urged Rev. Owusu Bempah to use his alleged spiritual powers to address pressing societal challenges rather than issuing political threats. “If he has powers, he should conjure miracles to end youth unemployment, poverty and the economic difficulties confronting the nation, rather than scaring people with continuous threats. The media and the public must stop encouraging dirty politics full of insults, false claims and character assassination,” Prof. Nyarko warned. The Kwadaso MP firmly rejected claims by Rev. Owusu Bempah that his spiritual declarations brought the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into power and forced the NPP into opposition. According to Prof. Nyarko, political outcomes in Ghana are determined by voters’ assessment of performance and economic realities rather than supernatural interventions. “The NPP lost the 2024 general election based on economic performance and the judgment of the Ghanaian voter, not because of anybody’s magical powers. Our findings clearly reveal otherwise. He was never the one who brought the NDC to power or sent the NPP into opposition, and he must stop creating the impression that he controls the political fortunes of parties.” Concerned about the potential impact of such pronouncements on national cohesion, Prof. Nyarko appealed to the Christian Council of Ghana and other religious governing bodies to caution Rev. Owusu Bempah against actions that could create tension and division.
