5 safety checks you should make before going to bed

A few simple checks before going to bed can help prevent household fires, protect loved ones and reduce unnecessary electricity use.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and fire safety experts advise households to switch off and unplug appliances that are not needed overnight, while also checking for other potential fire hazards.
Here are five important safety checks to make before going to bed:
1. Unplug phone and other chargers
Unplug chargers for phones, power banks, rechargeable lamps and laptops once the devices are fully charged. Leaving chargers connected for long periods can cause overheating and increase the risk of electrical fires.
2. Switch off and unplug heat-producing appliances
Make sure appliances such as electric irons, kettles, rice cookers, hot plates, air fryers, electric stoves and water heaters are switched off and unplugged before going to bed. Appliances that generate heat can become hazardous when left unattended.

3. Check the kitchen
Before retiring for the night, ensure all cooking appliances have been switched off. Keep paper, plastic bags, cloth and other flammable materials away from cooking areas.
4. Turn off electrical and entertainment devices
Switch off televisions, game consoles, sound systems, fans and other electrical devices that are not needed overnight. Unplugging some devices can also help reduce electricity consumption.
5. Inspect the entire home
Take a few minutes to walk around the house and ensure candles, mosquito coils, charcoal fires and lanterns have been properly extinguished.
Check that gas cylinders are safely secured, doors are locked and pathways are clear in case household members need to evacuate quickly.
A simple five-minute safety check before bed could help prevent a fire, protect property and, most importantly, save lives.
