'Ignorant' - President Mahama jabs Paul Yandoh over 'soldiers leaving war to construct road' comment

President John Dramani Mahama has taken a swipe at former Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, over the latter's comments on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway. Paul Yandoh, during a recent radio discussion, criticised the use of the military for clearing the path for the expressway. “Today, Ghana’s soldiers have stopped fighting wars. They (the soldiers) no longer go on missions in Lebanon and other places. Now, Ghana’s soldiers are constructing roads,” he said. Reacting to this at a ceremony to mark the handing over of the right-of-way for the expressway over the weekend, the President, without mentioning names, jabbed the NPP communicator. Mahama names 48 Engineer Regiment major sub-contractor for Accra-Kumasi Expressway The President asserted that only an ignorant person would say that soldiers cannot be used for the construction of roads. “I heard one of the radio commentators say, ‘... soldiers are now constructing roads’. I mean he is ignorant. For those of us who were old enough in the PNDC era when Rawlings decided to open up Afram Plains, no civilian contractor could construct Donkorkrom Road. “It was the Ghana Armed Forces that were asked to go and open up the road to Donkorkrom, and they accomplished the task,” he said.
