91st Ghana Open: GGA ready to host nearly 250 golfers – Kwaku Okyere

The President of the Ghana Golf Association (GGA), Leonard Kwaku Okyere, has said his outfit has put all the necessary measures in place for the 91st Ghana Open Golf Championship, scheduled for September 16–19, 2026. He indicated that the Celebrity Golf Club has been well prepared to host the event as golfers from Ghana and across the West African sub-region prepare to compete for honours. Speaking to the media during a cocktail event with sponsors in Accra on September 14, 2026, GGA President Leonard Kwaku Okyere shed light on what to expect at the upcoming tournament. Iñaki Williams’ Ghana Nightmare: Wrong player or wrong system? “I was on the course today at Celebrity, just checking the bunkers and the greens, and I think we're on course. Unfortunately, we haven't had rain, and rain is our first factor, but I think we've done a lot of watering to get the players to enjoy the tournament. We have almost about 250 participants. We have about 100 professionals, both men and women, coming from all over West Africa. "Of course, just last week we had a tournament in Achimota also for the West African sub-region, so it's a lot of pressure on us, but we are ready for them. And then we have about 150 amateurs playing in various groups. And so Friday will be a very heavy day, and Saturday will be the grand finale. That's when we'll crown the pros, the professionals, and the winner of the amateur event,” he said. The Captain of the Professional Golfers’ Association of Ghana (PGA), Vincent Torgah, said he and his fellow professionals are training diligently to make the nation proud at the championship. “Well, first of all, let me thank GGA for the good job done, for carrying out the pros for this big event in the calendar for professional golf in Ghana as a national tournament. It's one of the tournaments I'm looking forward to, and it's here. “The excitement was high for me, and I was hoping that it was the same feeling that I would carry along. Other guys will also do the same thing. And when I came into the country, I realised the spirit was high. They were training hard every day here and there to get themselves ready for the tournament. So honestly speaking, I'm looking forward to the difficult tournament and a very enjoyable week,” he added. The National Ladies Coordinator for the GGA, Catherine Fabbi, urged the public to expect an exciting competition and shed light on the preparations by the female golfers. “For the scratch event, I know Afi is preparing very well. Wendy Gyan, Hawa- they are all preparing to take up the crown. We have a lady from Uganda who just joined us, so I'm hoping she'll bring some major upsets, but not too much for the ladies, for my amateurs. “And then the handicap event, and then the scratch, not the scratch event—the support. All you new lady golfers, I'm inviting you; come have an experience. The Ghana Open is not just a game; it's an experience. We get to meet, we connect, we share ideas, and then have fun as well. So please sign up, and let's play,” she remarked. The cocktail event was organised to thank the sponsors of the 91st Ghana Open, acknowledge their support, introduce their companies to golfers and other participating organisations, and provide an opportunity for stakeholders to interact ahead of the championship.
