President Mahama orders road network review ahead of Airport enclave expansion

President John Dramani Mahama has directed a review of the road network around the Airport enclave and the central business district as the government prepares for increased traffic resulting from the rapid growth of new developments in the area.

The review comes as several major residential, commercial and hospitality projects are being developed around the Airport area, with the government expecting the projects to bring more people, vehicles and business activities into the enclave.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Sentuo Airport Garden City project on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, President Mahama said the growing developments could put additional pressure on the existing road network.

“I want to announce that the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Urban Roads have started looking at the road network in the airport enclave and the central business district. Because as developments like this come up, definitely the traffic congestion will also grow,” he said.

He said the government was considering changes to the road network to improve the movement of vehicles as traffic volumes increase.

“And so we need to widen the roads, create a system of one-ways, and improve the road network,” he added.

The planned road interventions come as the $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City project is being developed in the enclave.

The project is expected to include premium apartments, a 600-room hotel, a 2,500-capacity conference facility, healthcare facilities, a shopping mall and other commercial and leisure facilities.

President Mahama said the review was intended to ensure that road infrastructure develops alongside the expansion of the Airport enclave and can accommodate the additional traffic expected from these projects.
