Palgrave Boakye-Danquah gives update on Wontumi’s health in prison

Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, Spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has visited him at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison ahead of the party’s upcoming Delegates Conference.
According to Dr Boakye-Danquah, the visit took place on Monday, September 28, 2026, and was intended to check on Chairman Wontumi and convey assurances of continued support from the party’s leadership.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 29, Dr Boakye-Danquah said the visit reaffirmed what he described as the NPP leadership’s commitment to Chairman Wontumi and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s resolve to secure his release.
He said their discussions also reflected on the 72 days the former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman had spent in custody, describing the period as one that had given the NPP figure an opportunity for “sober reflection on humanity” and a deeper relationship with God.
According to Dr Boakye-Danquah, the experience had also shaped Chairman Wontumi’s perspective on leadership, resilience and service to the party and the country.
He recalled a message Wontumi gave him on July 20, 2026, which he said had remained a guiding principle.
“Work hard for the party and bring Dr Bawumia to power as President of Ghana in 2028/2029,” Dr Boakye-Danquah quoted him as saying.
He said that message would guide the party’s activities at the upcoming Delegates Conference.
The statement also touched on the death of Chairman Wontumi’s elder sister, whose one-week observance is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, at Kuntunase.
Dr Boakye-Danquah said Antwi Boasiako used the occasion to extend his best wishes and strength to his family as they prepare to observe the ceremony.

He added that Chairman Wontumi expressed appreciation to his family, friends, loved ones and NPP supporters for the prayers and support extended to him during his time in custody.
“He is fine, he is strong, and God is with him,” Dr Boakye-Danquah said in the statement.
Chairman Wontumi has been in custody at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison since his July conviction in the case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.
An Accra High Court convicted him over offences arising from mining activities at the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region and sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment.
His legal team subsequently appealed the conviction.
