Make presidential candidate leader of party, not national chairman - NPP Members urges

Some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region are calling on delegates to the party’s upcoming National Delegates Conference to amend the party’s constitution to make the Presidential Candidate the leader of the party instead of the National Chairman. According to the party members, the proposed change would provide greater clarity in leadership, promote unity of command and ensure more effective direction as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general elections. Speaking to OTEC News on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, ahead of the conference scheduled for Saturday, the members argued that having the National Chairman serve as the party’s leader creates two centres of power, which they said could lead to friction, mixed messaging, and power struggles between the party’s national headquarters and the camp of the Presidential Candidate. They maintained that, in their view, the Presidential Candidate should assume leadership of the party during the period leading up to a general election, as the candidate serves as the party’s principal representative in the electoral contest. One of the members explained that making the Presidential Candidate the leader would give the candidate greater authority to shape the party’s campaign message, strategy, and team, while ensuring that responsibility is matched with accountability. Another member argued that placing the party’s leadership under one central authority would help minimise internal disagreements and ensure that all party structures rally behind a single leader. The members therefore urged delegates attending the National Delegates Conference to support the proposed constitutional amendment. They said the move would help make the NPP more united, focused, and better coordinated as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.Source: otecfmghana.com
