AG to host over 10k members from over 100 countries in Accra at historic world congress

The Assemblies of God, Ghana, has disclosed that Accra will host more than 10,000 participants from over 100 countries for the 10th Triennial World Assemblies of God Congress, the first time in the 115-year history of the global Pentecostal fellowship that the event will be held on African soil.
The Congress, scheduled for October 14–16, 2026, will be held under the theme “COMMISSIONED: One Mandate, Every Nation”, with activities expected to combine leadership sessions, evangelism, prayers and evening revival rallies.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, October 1, 2026, the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev Stephen Yenusom Wengam, described the event as a historic opportunity for Ghana to showcase its hospitality, Christian heritage and capacity to host a major international gathering.
“It is the very first time in the 115-year history of the Assemblies of God Fellowship that its World Congress is taking place in Africa,” Rev Wengam said.
He said the decision to host the Congress in Ghana followed a proposal by the then Chairman of the Africa Assemblies of God Alliance and General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Tanzania, Rev Barnabas Mtokambali.
According to Rev Wengam, Assemblies of God, Ghana established a Local Organising Committee in 2024, chaired by the Greater Accra East Regional Superintendent, Rev Andrews Nelson Awintia, followed by the establishment of a World Congress Secretariat headed by Gifty Agyei-Fiankoh.
Rev Wengam said President John Dramani Mahama, whom he identified as a member of Assemblies of God, Ghana, and First Lady Lordina Mahama are expected to attend the opening ceremony at the Black Star Square on October 14, 2026.
He said 18 Ghanaian Ministers of State and other high-profile personalities had also confirmed their participation.
The Global Chairman of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship and General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Singapore, Rev Dominic Yeo, is also expected in Accra, alongside church leaders and ministers from across the world.
Former Malawi President and former General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Malawi, Rev Dr Lazarus Chakwera, and his wife are also expected to attend.
The General Superintendent said the international gathering could provide a boost to Ghana’s hospitality and informal business sectors, with thousands of international and local visitors expected in Accra.
“The historic event will serve as a magnet to attract thousands of tourists and a good number of investors to Ghana,” he said.
He added that the expected influx would “greatly boost the hospitality industry and significantly impact the national economy,” while local businesses, transport operators, food vendors and petty traders could also benefit.
Rev Wengam said the Congress would also advance the global Assemblies of God Fellowship’s MM33 initiative, which seeks to plant at least one million churches by 2033.
He explained that the target forms part of preparations to mark 2,000 years since the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“The theme for the World Assemblies of God Congress: COMMISSIONED: One Mandate, Every Nation, is not a mere slogan but a strident call on all Assemblies of God churches, pastors and members to win more souls and plant at least one million churches by the year 2033,” he said.
The congress will also address issues including church health, empowering the next generation and pursuing greater revival.
Rev Stephen Wengam said Assemblies of God currently has about 89.9 million members and 451,000 local branches globally, with approximately 20 million members in Africa.
He said Assemblies of God, Ghana alone has 10,077 local branches and more than 1.2 million members.
The morning sessions of the Congress will take place at the Black Star Square from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Rev Wengam said the church had been compelled to construct temporary infrastructure at the venue because no existing facility in Ghana could accommodate the expected 10,000 participants for the morning sessions.
The evening programme will move to the Accra Sports Stadium, where revival rallies open to people from all denominations will be held.
Among the musicians and ministers scheduled to participate are Ghanaian gospel musician Joe Mettle, Nigerian worship minister Dunsin Oyekan, international gospel artiste Sinach, Rev Angela Donadio of the United States, and the Gramophone Chorale.
They will minister alongside a 500-member Congress Mass Choir.
The Congress will also place significant emphasis on prayer, with Rev Wengam saying participants would intercede for nations facing conflict and social challenges as well as for Ghana.
“So we need to intercede for the world and our dear nation Ghana through fervent prayers. The Congress will direct massive prayers to cover these areas,” he said.
The 10th Triennial World Assemblies of God Congress follows the 9th Triennial Congress held in Madrid, Spain, in 2023.
