Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has expressed disappointment in President John Dramani Mahama over the detention of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, saying he did not expect such a development under the current administration.
Annoh-Dompreh’s reaction follows his visit to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to check on his colleague, who is being held as part of an ongoing investigation.
After leaving the premises without meeting Baffour Awuah, he expressed his disappointment over the development.
“I didn’t expect this under President Mahama,” he said as he left the premises.
Annoh-Dompreh described the situation as ‘very sad’, ‘very dejected’ and ‘very disappointing’, arguing that it was unprecedented for a sitting Member of Parliament to be detained under such circumstances.
He also questioned the state’s involvement in the matter, arguing that the case involved two private entities.
‘Nothing incriminating found at Baffour Awuah’s office’ - Annoh-Dompreh
“What is the locus of the state in this matter?” he asked, while also questioning the allegation of money laundering leveled against the Manhyia South MP.
According to Annoh-Dompreh, the court order obtained in connection with the matter did not state that he [Baffour Awuah] was being investigated over allegations of money laundering.
He, therefore, argued that the authorities had no case against the legislator.
He further accused the government of using its authority to intimidate the law maker, insisting that those in power should remember that political power is temporary.
“They should understand that the power is transient,” he said.
Despite his criticism, Annoh-Dompreh said the Minority would pursue its response within the confines of the law and would not take matters into its own hands.
“We will not take power in our hands and abuse the rules,” he said.
Baffour Awuah is being held at EOCO as investigations into the matter continue.
