'My support for President Mahama won't stop me from criticising EOCO actions' – Martin Kpebu

Lawyer Martin Kpebu has strongly criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for detaining Manhyia MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, saying his support for President John Mahama will not stop him from challenging actions he considers wrong.

Kpebu questioned how the MP’s detention would help the case when he had remained in the country for months after becoming aware of the matter.

“There is no way EOCO can convince me that the detention of Manhyia MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah will help the case,” he said during TV3's KeyPoints programme on October 3, 2026.

According to Kpebu, Baffour Awuah knew about the matter as far back as February but did not flee. He argued that the MP’s continued presence in the country raised questions about the need to keep him in custody.

“People saw this thing from February, and they didn’t run away. March, April, May, June, July, August, September. September end, we tried to arrest him,” he said.

He insisted that he could not understand the decision to detain the MP.

“For me, the detention, I would never understand it. There is no way,” he stated.

He also criticised how an EOCO official handled an earlier encounter involving Baffour Awuah, describing it as embarrassing. Despite that incident, he said, the MP remained in the country.

Kpebu made it clear that his criticism did not mean he had withdrawn his support for the Mahama administration. He said he would still vote for Mahama if an election were held today.

However, he stressed that political loyalty should never become an excuse for defending every government action.

“I still support this administration. Yes, it’s okay, but they don’t get everything right. So when they don’t get it right, we have to say,” he stated.

For Kpebu, defending personal liberty is a matter of principle and a major part of the legacy he hopes to leave. He said keeping quiet because he voted for President John Mahama would undermine that commitment.
