Ghanaian-born US Army Captain dies during training dive at Lake Hydra

A 31-year-old US Army captain originally from Ghana, has died while conducting certification dive training in Pennsylvania, according to West Point Public Affairs.
Army Captain Stephen O. Adjei died on Saturday, September 26, 2026, while conducting the training at Lake Hydra, Pennsylvania.
The US Military Academy and the West Point community have extended their condolences and support to Adjei’s family following his death.
“Our hearts are with the Adjei family during this difficult time. Capt. Adjei’s dedication to our cadets, commitment to his teammates, and service to others left a lasting impact on our community. He will be greatly missed,” Commandant of Cadets, Brigadier General Joe Katz said.
According to West Point Public Affairs, Adjei was originally from Accra and was a longtime resident of Worcester, Massachusetts.
He served as a logistics officer and joined the US Military Academy in June 2024 as an instructor in the Department of Military Instruction Accession Division.
In that role, he taught MS100 and served as a branch representative for the Quartermaster, Transportation Corps, Ordnance and Explosive Ordnance Disposal branches.
Adjei’s military service included serving as a distribution platoon leader and deploying to Camp Casey in South Korea. He also commanded a Forward Support Company in the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
His awards included the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with five oak leaf clusters. He also earned the Pathfinder and Air Assault badges.
West Point Public Affairs said military leadership was in close communication with Adjei’s family, friends and unit to provide support.
A memorial ceremony for his family and unit is scheduled to be held at West Point in October.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, according to West Point Public Affairs.
